God's Word is not chained

This is my gospel, for which I am suffering even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But God’s word is not chained. 2 Timothy 2: 9

Paul wrote these words to Timothy at the end of his life but they still resonate today. You cannot chain, silence or stifle God’s Word, the Bible. The most oppressive empires, regimes, governments and even societies down the centuries have all tried and failed. The Bible, the Word of God, the life giving and active word cannot be chained or silenced.

Persecuted Christians in Eritrea

I love the story in God’s Smuggler of Brother Andrew from the Netherlands taking Bibles into Communist Eastern Europe in the fifties and sixties. He found himself with a Romania pastor who spoke no German or Dutch and of course Brother Andrew spoke no Romanian. So they conversed together using the Bible. They showed one another a verse and then they looked it up in their own language. ItB started with Brother Andrew saying:

I Corinthians 16: 20 All the brethren greet you. Greet one another with a holy kiss.

The Romanian pastor replied: Proverbs 25: 25 Like cold water to a weary soul is good news from a distant land.

Brother Andrew: Philemon 4 – 7 I always thank my God as I remember you in my prayers, because I hear about your love for all his holy people and your faith in the Lord Jesus. I pray that your partnership with us in the faith may be effective in deepening your understanding of every good thing we share for the sake of Christ. Your love has given me great joy and encouragement, because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the Lord’s people.

And so on. God’s word cannot be chained. The Bible has all the answers to life, the universe and everything.  That is why the Bible is still in print thousands of years after being written and still in great demand in every country in the world especially where Christians face great persecution. Believers are still risking their lives to take and distribute the Word.

Countries facing the greatest religious persecution
From North Korea, the country where Christians face the most extreme persecution all across southern Asia (Chine and India), through the Middle East and North Africa to even Colombia in South America believers suffer for their faith. Islam not Communism is the great persecutor these days.  What these Christians crave most of all is Bibles.

There is a well-known Christian organization that sends aid, Bibles and other Christian literature to countries in great need. In one situation they use drug smugglers to take the Bibles into a country where it is banned. The smugglers take drugs one way but on the return trip through the mountains the mules have no cargo. The society has negotiated a deal whereby the mules are loaded with Bibles and when the organization hears from local pastors that the Bibles have safely arrived, they pay the smugglers. Ethically it sounds a bit dubious but lets face it – smuggling Bibles into these countries is illegal so how it is done isn’t really an issue.

The hunger for God’s word in these nations is immense and the demand far outweighs the supply.

Bible study

In the West we are spoilt – everyone of us has so many Bibles that supply far outweighs demand. We have every available resource to accompany the Word and teaching is easily accessed through the internet let alone through book stores.

The organization Bibles Unbound says that believers in countries facing great persecution ask for two things – our prayers and that we send Bibles.

Next time we open our Bibles, pray for those who have no Bible but would love one and let us value and treasure ours as the life giving Word of God – active and powerful that just cannot be chained.

Bulls eye prayer

9And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, 10 so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, 11 filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God. Philippians 1: 9 – 11

Prayer is one of the quickest topics to get you on a guilt trip. I think everyone feels they should pray more but I don’t think it is matter of more prayer but better prayer.  I was just thinking of some countries that are doing well and some that are not and I wondered about both the amount of prayer and the quality of prayer for those nations. Sometimes I think there may be plenty of prayer but is it hitting the mark?
I believe God wants us to consider ‘bulls-eye prayer’; prayer that really hits the target.  I don’t know about you but I can very easily start rambling and losing concentration especially when praying by myself. So to keep myself on track I like to use the Bible as my prayer guide by which I mean that using the Word helps me focus on God’s will for that person or situation.

The Bible has some great prayers like Paul’s one above which I like to pray over my family. There are other marvellous Paul prayers in Colossians 1 and Ephesians 1 and 3. The Lord’s Prayer is of course the best and if we use it as a guide rather than saying it by rote it can open so many wonderful avenues for prayer. It really is comprehensive.
The Psalms too, when personalised, make wonderful prayers. For instance, ‘The Lord is Bill’s shepherd; he shall not be in want. You make Bill lie down in green pastures, you lead him by still waters, you restore Bill's soul.’  As you pray this over family and friends and consider your prayer it can help you come to real faith that God will move powerfully in their life. Faith filled prayers are powerful prayers. I have a bit of psalms for all sorts of family members and friends.

Proverbs chapter 3 is a great prayer for youthful sons or grandsons and, believe me, this one is a life changer. This is because ‘The Word of God is living and active’ (Hebrews 4:12). It transforms lives.
It is really good to chat to God throughout the day but if you are struggling to pray, find some Scriptures to pray over those situations on your heart. It helps us to focus and I believe helps us hit the target with our prayers. Be encouraged because, ‘the prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective (James 5: 16). Our prayers do make a difference.

Born of incorruptible seed

The daily headers of this blog are a series of declarations of truth:
  • I am a child of God
  • I am saved by grace
  • I am forgiven of all my sins
  • I am born of incorruptible seed
Theses truths declared regularly have the greatest ability to set our minds free from ungodly beliefs and negative thoughts.

Today's truth comes from I Peter 1: 22 - 23
22 Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart, 23 having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever ...

The incorruptible seed is the word of God and it is through this and the work of the Holy Spirit that we have been born again.  Our old life has gone and we are living a new life.  What a wonderful thought to  meditate on at the start of a new year.

As we continue in our new life, it is the Word of God and the guiding hand of the Holy Spirit that continues to lead us into truth.  We cannot live our lives based on our or anyone else's opinions.  We must base our life on the word of God and what God says about himself and about us.  The word of God is incorruptible or as the NIV puts it imperishable.

The Bible does not corrupt and it has lasted for centuries.  Other ancient texts may have disappeared over time or can only be found in museums or universities but the Bible is available today as never before.  It is constantly being traanslated into new languages.  The Word of God never fails and can be relied on.  It's marvellous truths handed down century by centrury will lead us away from our old ways of sinful living and lead us into the freedom of walking dependent on God.  2011 was the 400th anniversary of the King James version of the Bible.  Let 2012 be the year when the incorruptible and imperishable word liberates us as we base our lives on the wonderful truths of the word.
